Mercian Scribes 2018-2019 workshop dates
Workshops run from 10am to 4pm, and are held at:
The Priory Centre, Church Road, Stretton, Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, DE13 0HE.
To book a place, and for all other enquiries contact: firstname.lastname@example.org
Details of equipment required is sent out before each workshop. Never fear though, if you don’t have something on the day, someone will always lend their supplies.
Occasionally a small charge will be asked for, for handouts that the tutors have produced or for specialist requirements for a workshop. This will only ever be nominal.
15th September 2018 Ruling Pen with Rachel Yallop This will be a relaxed, experimental day using a classic ruling pen, such as found in geometry sets, and a range of other similar pens, including hand-made “cola” pens, to produce loose italic-style lettering on a grand scale. Lots of ink, paper and imagination will be used.
contact email@example.com for further details and to book your desk.
20th October 2018 Stencilling a Christmas Card with Kath Partington “Stencil – a plate perforated with a design, lettering, etc. from which copies are made by applying paint etc. through it onto paper or other material.” The dictionary definition says it all really. We’ll cut acetate stencils to our own designs and experiment with a range of wet and dry media to achieve a variety of finishes. By the way, it doesn’t have to be a Christmas card!
24th November 2018 Interesting Backgrounds with Deborah Morton A compilation of some assorted background techniques will be demonstrated and practised, using watercolours, acrylics and pastels. Lettering will be incorporated when and where possible. A small booklet will be created in the last hour to keep the papers safely.
19th January 2019 A fresh look at the Chad Gospels with Peter Halliday We can have no better person than Peter for this workshop. The St Chad, or Lichfield Gospels is of course our local treasure and can usually be seen at Lichfield Cathedral. The script is Insular Half Uncial and this manuscript is the illustration used in Stan Knight’s “Historical Scripts”, pp.46 & 47. A lovely bold, round script that rarely seems to appear in workshops.
16th February 2019 Next steps in Printing with Iain Hodgkinson After a super first visit to us in November 2017, Iain is back by popular demand. The aim is to develop our lino- or wood-cutting skills and to introduce more colour and collage effects into the prints. If you haven’t done any lino-cutting before, don’t worry, Iain will begin with the basics and we will each continue at our own pace.
16th March 2019 Modern Calligraphy with David Simons You can’t miss “Modern Calligraphy”, it is all around us on greetings cards, book covers and advertising. It might look like just someone’s loopy handwriting but it is far more than that - it is a pointed pen- or brush-written script in the copperplate family. Whether you’ve tried to produce this style or not, this day will be the perfect introduction to how to achieve this very popular style.
27th April 2019 Art Deco with Cherry Burston Cherry will introduce us to the elements of Art Deco lettering so that we can produce an elegant initial, name or heading, with appropriate accompanying text.
18th May 2019 Art Nouveau with Cherry Burston Simple to elaborate and back in time, Cherry will do the same for Art Nouveau lettering. Together these two workshops should greatly expand our lettering styles.
22nd June 2019 Bringing together the years Techniques - Three Tutors Over the year it can be difficult to find time to use the new scripts and techniques learned in the workshops. This is a chance to develop ideas and use the techniques, perhaps working towards a finished piece of work, with the three in-house tutors, Cherry, Deborah and Kath, on hand to help with their subjects.
20th July 2019 AGM & Album Making with Kath Partington At each workshop this year we hope you will produce a small finished piece or a set of trials or examples within a size frame of your choosing, or foldable to that size. At this workshop, after the AGM, we’ll produce a simple, soft-covered, appropriately sized album to hold your record of the year’s work. Of course, you can make the album any size you wish to hold anything you wish.
